Being closely connected with the systematic character of language as a whole, and of each compartment within it, analogy acts as a way of expressing the individual tendency to adjust and organize the linguistic material as coherently and economically as possible within the language system. We shall outline the role of analogy at the morphological level, focusing on the evolution of the Romanian noun flexion, where analogy functioned (and still functions) favouring the regularities. Thus, analogy brought an essential contribution to the reorganization of Romanian noun declensions both by eliminating the fourth and fifth Latin declensions and emphasizing on the first declension (in which distinguishes the stea – stele type) With analogy, words are placed within a well-organized paradigm, in which the functional oppositions are clear and unambiguous.
