Focusing on Marin Preda’s novel, the paper aims at emphasizing love’s negative influences in a time of social and political transformations. It also stresses upon the social impact of the woman who, in the various portrayals of her mystery, leads to the decline of a man determined to turn love into his shelter. The critical appreciations, as well as the reproductions and analysis of certain text fragments emphasize and analyze the aspects of feminity, the evolutions and avatars of the couple regarded as a social core, in a time of rigorous moral standards. “Cel mai iubit dintre pamanteni” (The Most Beloved of Earthlings) describes the drama around the decline of an intellectual, as a consequence of an affective imbalance. Each of his 4 great loves adds a “dark page” to the life of a philosopher, eventually turning him into a victim of the inexorical dialectics of life’s extremes. The paper is centered around the intellectual’s psychological disaster, a disaster brought by his perpetual aspiration of eventually finding his feminine ideal, in a time dominated by social implacability. The main character is trapped in a demonic maze and thrown in the abyss of his love life. The escape from his troubled social life is found to be impossible, and the human “chain of weaknesses” ends with a biblical reference: Ïf there is no love, there is nothing else”.
